CHAPTER I

Introduction

As part of daily living, people work and spend the whole day in their jobs in order to get money to finance their basic needs. They are well-determined to work that sometimes they don't notice they are almost abusing themselves physically and emotionally. These may lead to stress. Stress is an emotionally disruptive or unsetting of our mind that occurs as a result of adverse external influences.

The stress that usually occurs among employees is called occupational stress, the kind of stress that is associated with the workplace.

Stress is a common phenomenon since then and many studies have been conducted in order to determine how stress affects man's lífe. There are also published studies that show the various concepts that are closely related to the word stress. One of these concepts is the relationship between stress and job performance.

In Quezonc City, former capital city of the Philippines, where large numbers of people are employed, employees are predicted to possess occupational stress. This kind of stress might have something to do with their job performance. The researcher of the study aims to know the impact of occupational stress on the job performance of employees in Quezon City, hence this study might serve as a tool for employees to become more concious of the problems that may exist within the workplace and may then affect their job performance. The study will also provide some advice on how employees should cope with occupational stress in order to sustain better job performance.

Conceptual Framework

The diagram shows the connection between the four variables-workplace, emplnyees, job performance and occupational stress. It illustrates the respective role of each variable to one another that forms the cycle. Workplace is the origin of the cycle. Workplace affects the employees depending on its working condition or working environment. If the workplace is clean and has a pleasant condition, it will give a good mood to employees to perform their job well. In the contrary, if the workplace is unpleasant, uncomfortable and with loads of works to be done, it will lead the employees to possess occupational stress. The employees who possers stress may perform poor on their job performance; and poor job performance may then affect the overall condition of the workplace.

3. What causes the employees to possess occupational stress at work?

Ha: There is a significant impact of occupational stress on the job performance of employees in Quezon City.

Most importantly, the study will give an insight to the mind of employees about the impact of stress in their job performance. The study also seeks to help them know how to deal and cope with occupational stress in order to perform better in their jobs.

Scope and Delimitation

The title of the study is the impact of occupational stress on the job performance of employees in Quezon City. It was narrowed down from the previous title-"the impact of stress on the job performance of employees".

The researcher limits the topic onto occupational stress because the term "stress" has broad classifications. Occupational stress is the most appropriate one for the problem.

Since the respondents of the study would only come from Quezon City then the study was so entitled.

The respondents are employees from Quezon City with ages twentyone (21) to thirty (30) years old. This range of age is the majority age of employees.

The researcher believes that this study is timely favorable to do. The problem still exists up to this present time onwards.
