CHAPTER III

A Case Study on the "Credibility and Reliability of the Time-in and Time-out of Staff on Logbook Records in the Tele Eye Company During the Absence of the Top Management When Doing Projects Outside the Company"

III.1 Background of the case study

Tele Eye Company is a company engaged in selling digital surveillance equipment like CCTV Camera. The company is known for its quality products and good services. The business acheives its current success through continous innovation to improve their products as well as their service.

Though the company is physically successful, still it faces some problems that they consider an obstacle. One of the problems of the Tele Eye Company is the cheating on the time-in and time-out of their staff on logbook which also a cause on the cheating on the reimbursement of transportation expenses of their employees. The company has always doubted the credibility and the reliability of the records of time-in and time-out of staff on the logbook. This happens because the projects that the company has, are always done on the clients site and not with the location of Tele Eye Company. Aside from it, according to the company, there is no person permanent in-charged to check the logbook, so its the staff themselves have the will to put honestly their time-in and time-out on the logbook or sometimes the company in-charge one of its staffs to handle and check it. Because of this, the top management could not always monitor if there is cheating happening during their absence. Hence the company cannot find solution to this problem.

This probem may affect the total performance of the company. If there is cheating, we can say that the company's payment for salaries and benefits for employees is not worth it but a loss instead. In return, the staff should always be honest and deserving for the job they perform.

From our interview with the Tele Eye Company representative, he said that the company lacks the Human Resources (HR) Department which most companies should have. The Human Resources Department is important in many aspects of the company like for recruitment, training and development and performance management of employees and employee relations. It might be the weakness of the company why it faced problems like time cheating on logbook records. More possible problems may arise when this problem will remain unsolved.

III.2 Scope and Delimitation

The study is merely focusing in one subject matter which is how to solve the problem regarding the "credibility and reliability of the time-in and time-out of staff on logbook records in the Tele Eye Company during the absence of the Top management when doing projects outside the company.

The study is conducted from the 3rd week of August to the 1st week of October which only aims to find alternative solutions that the Tele Eye Company should do to solve the problem.

III.3 Key Characters and / or Department Involved

* Tele Eye Company
* Top management (supervisor, director, president)
* staff

Chapter V

We have analyzed and observed the problem by conducting an interview to the Tele Eye Company. The research method used is descriptive-analytical method. We described and determined the problem by collecting data/information through direct interview and analyzed it to come up with the interpretation of the problem and its possible solutions.

The main focus of the case study is on how to maintain a fair, credible and reliable logbook records of staff even wihout the presence of top management to check it. This problem exists in the company of Tele Eye when the top management are doing projects with their clients outside the company while the staff are left behind to let them do their jobs.

Since the company has no authorized permanent person to handle the recording of the time-in and time-out of staff on the logbook, then the doubt for the fair and honest records on the logbook is not impossible to take place. Another thing is the company's lack of HR Department (that if existing, it would have been responsible to all the problems relating to employees). As a result of this, the problem being studied was brought about. It needs to be resolved in time by no other than the company itself.

4.1.3 Market Segmentation Strategy

Exogrill will target the low to mid-income consumers who use to find affordable food like street food. These people are very good representation of the Exogrill's general target market. By providing exotic food and street food that are commonly inexpensive in price but truly appetizing, the Exogrill can manage to achieve its desired target customers.

In general, the market segment strategy of Exogrill is to answer the majority's demand for street food products and make them enjoy it the way they use to feel when eating street foods offered in affordable prices

4.2 Market Analysis

The Exogrill will focus on the customers who are looking for affordable food. These are the customers in low and middle class society who only earn enough income to secure their basic needs. You can always get these desired customers from the passers-by who can be students, teen-agers and adults. Exogrill make these group of people as the target market for the products particularly the street or exotic food.

4.2.1 Demand Analysis

For us to the measure estimated demand for the Exogrill. We first determine our target market. Our target market are the passers-by within the area of the location of Exogrill. These passers-by are composed of students and non-students from age 12 to 20 years old and adults from age 21 years and above.

From our observation, we found out that the total number of passers-by within an hour in the place is 992 or 1000 people when rounded off. Since Exogrill will operate 6 hours daily then we assumed that the total population (of passers-by) in the area is 6000 people. We also estimated percentage of the people in age 12 to 20 years old and 21 years old and older. See the table below:

The location is near to the possible sources of the Exogrill's primary products - the exotic food : in muñoz market, just beside the business location and balintawak market, just a short ride from the said place.

e. People / Management Team
As for the start of business operation, the partners will manage the Exogrill as the co-owners and co-workers too. The partners will also be the employees of the business and would just ask assistance from family, relatives or friends. The partners assume that on the first three months of operations, there will only be few customers that need few staffs. After three months of operations, the Exobar will hire appropriate numbers of staffs for proper accomodation of customers and better provision of services. The management team will be led by the partners themselves.

F. Profitability
The exotic food or the street food which shows good market potentials will earn good profits. These foods are affordable which people do consider when buying a product or service. Exogrill is simply a small business engaged in selling food like street food (but in more general term, we call it exotic food). From the name itself, the business offers primarily exotic food as well as other popular pinoy street food. Exogrill also offers drinks as its secondary products like "juices, palamig, and softdrinks" that are readily available and sold in affordable prices. THE IMPACT OF OCCUPATIONAL STRESS ON THE JOB PERFORMANCE OF EMPLOYEES IN QUEZON CITY

As Partial Fulfilment of the Requirement for the Degree of Bachelor of Science in
Entrepreneurial Management

A Research Study

Presented to:

Dr. Rolando Alcantara

By:

Jerry Jake G. Reyes

CHAPTER I

Introduction

As part of daily living, people work and spend the whole day in their jobs in order to get money to finance their basic needs. They are well-determined to work that sometimes they don't notice they are almost abusing themselves physically and emotionally. These may lead to stress. Stress is an emotionally disruptive or unsetting of our mind that occurs as a result of adverse external influences.

The stress that usually occurs among employees is called occupational stress, the kind of stress that is associated with the workplace.

Stress is a common phenomenon since then and many studies have been conducted in order to determine how stress affects man's lífe. There are also published studies that show the various concepts that are closely related to the word stress. One of these concepts is the relationship between stress and job performance.

In Quezonc City, former capital city of the Philippines, where large numbers of people are employed, employees are predicted to possess occupational stress. This kind of stress might have something to do with their job performance. The researcher of the study aims to know the impact of occupational stress on the job performance of employees in Quezon City, hence this study might serve as a tool for employees to become more concious of the problems that may exist within the workplace and may then affect their job performance. The study will also provide some advice on how employees should cope with occupational stress in order to sustain better job performance.

Conceptual Framework

The diagram shows the connection between the four variables-workplace, emplnyees, job performance and occupational stress. It illustrates the respective role of each variable to one another that forms the cycle. Workplace is the origin of the cycle. Workplace affects the employees depending on its working condition or working environment. If the workplace is clean and has a pleasant condition, it will give a good mood to employees to perform their job well. In the contrary, if the workplace is unpleasant, uncomfortable and with loads of works to be done, it will lead the employees to possess occupational stress. The employees who possers stress may perform poor on their job performance; and poor job performance may then affect the overall condition of the workplace.

Statement of the Problem

The study aims to investigate the impact of occupational stress on the job performance of employees in Quezon City and has the purpose to answer the following questions:
1. Do emplyoyees of Quezon City believe that occupational stress affect their job performance?
2. What are the possible effects of occupational stress on the job performance of employees in Quezon City?
3. What causes the employees to possess occupational stress at work?

Assumption

The study is all about the impact of occupational stress on the job performance of employees and is assumed to give important informations that can justify it. The researcher assumes the study to find answers that merely detail and explain the problem the study was in the focus of.

Hypothesis

Ho: There is no significant impact of occupational stress on the job performance of employees in Quezon City.

Ha: There is a significant impact of occupational stress on the job performance of employees in Quezon City.

Significance of the Study

The researcher of the thesis believes that the study will provide informations that will help discuss occupational stress as a major problem of employees that affects job performance.

By this study, other potential researches might also be conducted in order to acheive further development on the public knowledge and better results about the subject.

Most importantly, the study will give an insight to the mind of employees about the impact of stress in their job performance. The study also seeks to help them know how to deal and cope with occupational stress in order to perform better in their jobs.

Scope and Delimitation

The title of the study is the impact of occupational stress on the job performance of employees in Quezon City. It was narrowed down from the previous title-"the impact of stress on the job performance of employees".

The researcher limits the topic onto occupational stress because the term "stress" has broad classifications. Occupational stress is the most appropriate one for the problem.

Since the respondents of the study would only come from Quezon City then the study was so entitled.

The respondents are employees from Quezon City with ages twentyone (21) to thirty (30) years old. This range of age is the majority age of employees.

The researcher believes that this study is timely favorable to do. The problem still exists up to this present time onwards.

As part of daily living, daily work are people's way to spend their whole day. Specially for workers who are so eager to work in order to get money as means for their necessity and for the people they dedicate their effort to work. They are well-determined to work that sometimes they don't notice they are almost abusing themselves while possessing many problems as well. These may lead to stress. Stress is an emotionally discruptive or unsetting of our mind that occurs as a result of adverse external influences.

The stress that usually occur among employees is called occupational stress. The kind of stress that is associated with the workplace.

Stress is a common phenomenon since then and many studies have been conducted in order to determine how stress affects man's life. There are also published studies that show the various concepts that are closely related to the word stress. One of these concepts is the relationship between stress and job performance. As what the study want to know, if there is a linkage between occupational stress and job performance of employees.

In Quezon City, former capital city of the philippines, where large number of people are employed, employees are predicted to possess occupational stress. This kind of stress might have something to do with their job performance. The researcher of the study aims to know the impact of occupational stress on the job performance of employees in Quezon City.

Since the study is not considered as a post-graduate thesis, the researcher merely choose the appropriate location to conduct the study. Quezon City is more likely to be chosen for ease and time-saving selection of respondents. It would be easy for the researcher to select the respondents for the study since the researcher is a bonafide resident of Quezon City.

By this study, other potential researches might also be conducted which may acheive further development on public knowledge and other purpose about the impact of occupational stress on the job performance of employees.

Organization Structure

An organization structure is a mainly hierarchical concept of subordination of entities that collaborate and contribute to serve one common aim.
Organizations are a variant of clustered entities. An organization can be structured in many different ways and styles, depending on their objectives and ambience. The structure of an organization will determine the modes in which it operates and performs.
Organizational structure allows the expressed allocation of responsibilities for different functions and processes to different entities such as the branch, department, workgroup and individual. Individuals in an organizational structure are normally hired under time-limited work contracts or work orders, or under permanent employment contracts or program orders.
Organizational structure types
Pre-bureaucratic structures
Pre-bureaucratic (entrepreneurial) structures lack standardization of tasks. This structure is most common in smaller organizations and is best used to solve simple tasks. The structure is totally centralized. The strategic leader makes all key decisions and most communication is done by one on one conversations. It is particularly useful for new (entrepreneurial) business as it enables the founder to control growth and development.
They are usually based on traditional domination or charismatic domination in the sense of Max Weber's tripartite classification of authority.
Bureaucratic structures
Bureaucratic structures have a certain degree of standardization. They are better suited for more complex or larger scale organizations. They usually adopt a tall structure. Then tension between bureaucratic structures and non-bureaucratic is echoed in Burns and Stalker[1] distinction between mechanistic and organic structures. It is not the entire thing about bureaucratic structure. It is very much complex and useful for hierarchical structures organization, mostly in tall organizations.
Post-bureaucratic
The term of post bureaucratic is used in two senses in the organizational literature: one generic and one much more specific [2]. In the generic sense the term post bureaucratic is often used to describe a range of ideas developed since the 1980s that specifically contrast themselves with Weber's ideal type bureaucracy. This may include total quality management, culture management and matrix management, amongst others. None of these however has left behind the core tenets of Bureaucracy. Hierarchies still exist, authority is still Weber's rational, legal type, and the organization is still rule bound. Heckscher, arguing along these lines, describes them as cleaned up bureaucracies [3], rather than a fundamental shift away from bureaucracy. Gideon Kunda, in his classic study of culture management at 'Tech' argued that 'the essence of bureaucratic control - the formalisation, codification and enforcement of rules and regulations - does not change in principle.....it shifts focus from organizational structure to the organization's culture'.
Another smaller group of theorists have developed the theory of the Post-Bureaucratic Organization.[3], provide a detailed discussion which attempts to describe an organization that is fundamentally not bureaucratic. Charles Heckscher has developed an ideal type, the post-bureaucratic organization, in which decisions are based on dialogue and consensus rather than authority and command, the organization is a network rather than a hierarchy, open at the boundaries (in direct contrast to culture management); there is an emphasis on meta-decision making rules rather than decision making rules. This sort of horizontal decision making by consensus model is often used in housing cooperatives, other cooperatives and when running a non-profit or community organization. It is used in order to encourage participation and help to empower people who normally experience oppression in groups.
Still other theorists are developing a resurgence of interest in complexity theory and organizations, and have focused on how simple structures can be used to engender organizational adaptations. For instance, Miner et al. (2000) studied how simple structures could be used to generate improvisational outcomes in product development. Their study makes links to simple structures and improviseal learning. Other scholars such as Jan Rivkin and Sigglekow[4], and Nelson Repenning [5] revive an older interest in how structure and strategy relate in dynamic environments.
Functional structure
Employees within the functional divisions of an organization tend to perform a specialized set of tasks, for instance the engineering department would be staffed only with software engineers. This leads to operational efficiencies within that group. However it could also lead to a lack of communication between the functional groups within an organization, making the organization slow and inflexible.
As a whole, a functional organization is best suited as a producer of standardized goods and services at large volume and low cost. Coordination and specialization of tasks are centralized in a functional structure, which makes producing a limited amount of products or services efficient and predictable. Moreover, efficiencies can further be realized as functional organizations integrate their activities vertically so that products are sold and distributed quickly and at low cost [6]. For instance, a small business could start making the components it requires for production of its products instead of procuring it from an external organization. But not only beneficial for organization but also for employees faiths.
Divisional structure
Also called a "product structure", the divisional structure groups each organizational function into a divisions. Each division within a divisional structure contains all the necessary resources and functions within it. Divisions can be categorized from different points of view. There can be made a distinction on geographical basis (a US division and an EU division) or on product/service basis (different products for different customers: households or companies). Another example, an automobile company with a divisional structure might have one division for SUVs, another division for subcompact cars, and another division for sedans. Each division would have its own sales, engineering and marketing departments.
Matrix structure
The matrix structure groups employees by both function and product. This structure can combine the best of both separate structures. A matrix organization frequently uses teams of employees to accomplish work, in order to take advantage of the strengths, as well as make up for the weaknesses, of functional and decentralized forms. An example would be a company that produces two products, "product a" and "product b". Using the matrix structure, this company would organize functions within the company as follows: "product a" sales department, "product a" customer service department, "product a" accounting, "product b" sales department, "product b" customer service department, "product b" accounting department. Matrix structure is amongst the purest of organizational structures, a simple lattice emulating order and regularity demonstrated in nature.
• Weak/Functional Matrix: A project manager with only limited authority is assigned to oversee the cross- functional aspects of the project. The functional managers maintain control over their resources and project areas.
• Balanced/Functional Matrix: A project manager is assigned to oversee the project. Power is shared equally between the project manager and the functional managers. It brings the best aspects of functional and projectized organizations. However, this is the most difficult system to maintain as the sharing power is delicate proposition.
• Strong/Project Matrix: A project manager is primarily responsible for the project. Functional managers provide technical expertise and assign resources as needed.
Among these matrixes, there is no best format; implementation success always depends on organization's purpose and function.

Organization Design

Organization design involves the creation of roles, processes, and formal reporting relationships in an organisation. One can distinguish between two phases in an organisation design process: Strategic grouping, which establishes the overall structure of the organisation, (its main sub-units and their relationships), and operational design, which defines the more detailed roles and processes. The field is mainly practice-driven and many consulting firms offer organisation design assistance to managers. However, there is also a substantial academic literature. The most frequently cited book is still Thompson (1967); other key works include Galbraith (1973) and Lawrence & Lorsch (1967).
It is important to distinguish between organisation design and organisation theory. The latter is a descriptive discipline, mainly focusing on describing and understanding organisational functioning. Organisation design is (as the name suggests) a more normative, design-oriented discipline that aims to produce the frameworks and tools required to create effective organisations.

Organization Culture

Organizational culture is an idea in the field of Organizational studies and management which describes the psychology, attitudes, experiences, beliefs and values (personal and cultural values) of an organization. It has been defined as "the specific collection of values and norms that are shared by people and groups in an organization and that control the way they interact with each other and with stakeholders outside the organization."[1]
This definition continues to explain organizational values, also known as "beliefs and ideas about what kinds of goals members of an organization should pursue and ideas about the appropriate kinds or standards of behavior organizational members should use to achieve these goals. From organizational values develop organizational norms, guidelines, or expectations that prescribe appropriate kinds of behavior by employees in particular situations and control the behavior of organizational members towards one another."[1]
Organizational culture is not the same as corporate culture. It is wider and deeper concepts, something that an organization 'is' rather than what it 'has'. Corporate culture is the total sum of the values, customs, traditions, and meanings that make a company unique. Corporate culture is often called "the character of an organization", since it embodies the vision of the company’s founders. The values of a corporate culture influence the ethical standards within a corporation, as well as managerial behavior.[2]
Senior management may try to determine a corporate culture. They may wish to impose corporate values and standards of behavior that specifically reflect the objectives of the organization. In addition, there will also be an extant internal culture within the workforce. Work-groups within the organization have their own behavioral quirks and interactions which, to an extent, affect the whole system. Roger Harrison's four-culture typology, and adapted by Charles Handy, suggests that unlike organizational culture, corporate culture can be 'imported'. For example, computer technicians will have expertise, language and behaviors gained independently of the organization, but their presence can influence the culture of the organization as a whole.

The Background and Significance

Rexobar - a combination of Exotic Food Restaurant and Bar. It is basically a business associated with the products and services it offers particularly the food and drinks. This is the ideal business we would like to develop. It is generally a commercial business that offers products such as food and drinks and services like the ambiance and musical performances.
We have come up of thinking this business idea because it is a rare business wherein a restaurant bar offers exotic foods. Exotic foods are excitingly different or unusual foods offered in few restaurants. These foods can't be found in just any other restaurants. Crickets, rats, cockroaches, frogs, snakes, wild pigs, wild ducks and lizards are just some example of exotic foods.
Although the Rexobar also offers regular food and drinks and live musical band performances, the exotic food is the main attraction of the business specially for tourists or foreign customers. Because of it more potential customers are more likely to try the Rexobar because of its somewhat unique offers.
In a Restobar or Restaurant Bar, most customers find their way to spend their leisure time for relaxation is through drinking and viewing musical bands performing on stage while others would prefer to look for a new and exciting way of relaxation and this one would attract them, to try the exotic foods. So while enjoying a live performance or to match with their drinks, eating exotic foods as well would add some more pleasure and enjoyment inside the restobar.
In overall, the Rexobar is a Restaurant Bar that serves exotic foods and gives a greater and different way of fun and enjoyment to its customers.

General Objectives

Since the food industry and entertainment are good target to have plenty of customers, the business proposal is in the line of offering musical entertainment and selling food and drinks that emphasizes the selling of exotic food. The main purpose is to introduce the exotic food in public and intentionally, to attract potential foreign customers with the attraction and ambiance of the Rexobar. In general, the Rexobar intends to be a different and good choice of both local and foreign customers for foods, drinks, and musical entertainment.

Specific Objectives

¤ To establish a feasible business in food and musical entertainment.

¤ To introduce an exciting way to enjoy the experience inside a restobar by means of exotic foods.

¤ To have a loyal and valuable customers in both local and foreign citizens.

Hypothesis

The Restaurant for Exotic Foods plus bar (Rexobar) might provide a good business opportunity to introduce exotic foods and serve as tourist attraction as well for local and foreign customers in restaurant and bar business.

Aim of the Study

This is just a business proposal aiming to introduce a different variation of Restaurant Bar (Restobar) - the Rexobar. The business is primarily a restaurant that offers foods but concentrates on exotic foods and also manages a bar. This is a rare kind of a restaurant selling exotic foods but also engaged in running a bar. The business proposal assumes that it will be a good business plan to pursue in a long run since the business idea is known to be a good business for commodity and entertainment.

F. Financing or Capitalization Requirement

The Rexobar needs a great capital to start the operation. Since it is a partnership company, the capital is equally shared by the partners. Eighty percent (80%) would come from the equal shares of each partner and twenty percent (20%) would come from loan from bank. I am Ninoy (Ako si Ninoy) by Vince Tañada

Title: I am Ninoy (Ako si Ninoy)
Director: Vince Tañada
Characters:
Vince Tanada as Ninoy Aquino
Cindy Liper as Corazon Aquino
Patrick Libao as Noli
Allison Gonzales as Joy
Tere Tajan as Ms. Nuñez
Regie Caranyagan as Oscar
Kierwin Larena as Yosef
Patricia Lopez as Andeng
Alex Dorola as Quentin
Jm Bautista as Dr. Ungria
Monique Azerreda as Ingrid
Chin Ortega as Nanding
Gabby Bautista as Osborne
Tope Palma as Manager Fernando Carlos
Jill Villar as Dean Argos
Melbourne Estrana as Tanya

SYNOPSIS

The play showed the different faces of
Ninoy- as a husband, father,
reporter, icon, and eventually
Ninoy as the hero.
As a father, the struggle of Ninoy
to choose to leave Boston and his
family behind to go back to the
Philippines was compared to
Noli, the migrant worker who
was forced to leave the
Philippines so that he can
provide for his wife Ivy and their
son Osborne.
During his exile in Boston, Ninoy
was also portrayed as a migrant
who is homesick for his country,
just like Nanding, a war veteran
who lives in the United States.
As a reporter, Ninoy was
portrayed as always searching
for the truth which was
highlighted by his choice to join
Philippine soldiers in Korea with
the United Nations Allied Forces.
This was compared to a
professor, Miss Nuñez, who
discovers that another professor
sexually harassed Ingrid, her
student and vowed to give
justice to her. Ninoy as a media
person was compared to Oscar, a reporter who exposed a
politician who is also a jueteng
lord. Both Miss Nuñez and Oscar
were challenged by their
superiors to stand up for their
beliefs.
Ninoy’s selfless attitude was
portrayed through Dr. Ungria, a
doctor who helps patients pro
bono. The brave Ninoy was
compared to Ingrid, the student
who despite being a victim of
sexual harassment managed to
graduate at the top of her class.
Ninoy as an icon was compared
to Yosef, a young actor who
despite his fame is still searching for other things that he can achieve.
As a hero, Ninoy was shown as
championing the cause of the
masses especially when he
decided to join the fight against
the fascism and dictatorship of
the Marcos regime. This was
compared to the struggles of
Quentin, an activist calling for
genuine agrarian reform and
Andeng, a labor union leader.

The play’s message is simple,
that anyone and everyone who
struggles for the truth, against
tyranny and injustice even in
their own little way is a hero. We do not need the blood of Ninoy t run in our veins to be able to fight for our rights. What we need is the resolve to do more for our country, and that is to join in the struggle of the majority for peace and justice.

Commentaries

Another wonderful play i had watched was the musical play,'Ako si Ninoy' which was primarily a tribute to the heroism of the late ninoy aquino. The play had made me amaze ,laugh, and clap because of the professional actors with great acting talents and a sense of humor. It had been a very good play presentation that was interesting and a must see stage play. The play was educational for it had delivered a clear message about the life of the hero ninoy aquino from being an ordinary person with patriotism, unselfish belief and principle for his country until he became a great hero by fighting for what he know is very right. The whole message of the story was to let everyone know that each of filipinos can be a 'Ninoy' or a hero in their own way. It might be by profession or by social and political involvement through social and political participation concerned with the wellness of the country and filipinos. The near ending of the stage play had been presented by the death of a leader of rally of a group of farmers fighting for a genuine agrarian reform. The assassination death of ninoy aquino was also presented to show the relevance of his death to the death of the rally leader which was both were example of heroism. After that incedent, the farmers finally achieved what they are fighting for. By this scenario the quotation of Ninoy Aquino had proved that filipinos are worth dying for.

Lourdes Villas - a poor pregnant mother of Julie Ann

Julie Ann - a 3 year old child and also suffers from malnutrition that causes her death

SYNOPSIS

It starts in a case study of a 19 year old female from Bicol whose case is extremely shocking, unusual and hard to believe. She is so malnurished to the extent that its so difficult for her to stand or walk from her bed or move like a normal person. These description is refering to a girl named Angela who suffers from many complications like pneumonia and lung diseases which are also caused by extreme malnutrition. The girl dies just some weeks after she was featured by Kara David in her documentary.

The next case study is about the family of Mr. Ciriaco Hansol, he only earn at about 30 pesos most of the time and very lucky if he gets 70 pesos from carrying pales of fishes in different kinds. Mr. Hansol's earnings would become the budget for the day of his wife and seven children. His children are all malnourished like Jeremy, 14 year old and his eldest child, only weighs same to a two year old child, Joey, 6 years old and has a weight which is normal for a baby at 7 months, Aljun, two years old with weight normal for a two month old baby. Julie ann is just one among the eight children of a pregnant mother, Lourdes Villas. Lourdes is so problematic on how to raise her children and she even asks God about the future of her children. According to her, they are lucky if she has 20 pesos to buy a can of sardines. After two months, Julie Ann dies just like what happen to Angela and Jeremy.

COMMENTARIES

This documentary reveals the reality of today's filipino situations. Most of us are unconcious of what other filipinos are experiencing. Although we know already that there are filipinos belonging to poverty state but not as bad as what the documentary Buto't Balat has revealed. In the case of poverty state shown in Buto't Balat, hunger and malnutrition are two joining problems that result to a more complex hardship for survival of poor filipinos. I feel great pity to these filipinos who suffer from poverty but pity has no help to contribute so prompt actions and urgent solutions should be implied. I will be more aware about my surroundings and i will help them in my own little way and hopefully other will help too. Even lives were suddenly decreasing because of hunger and malnutrition. So I'm calling the total attention of government for this, don't wait to lose more lives.
How ironic that the rich becomes richer and the poor becomes poorer. Let us work together to solve the problem. The rich share their wealth to the poor and the poor help themselves by controling themselves from expanding of family size because later on the children will suffer most and eventually become poor like their parents.

Uuwi na si Udong by kara David

Title: Uuwi na si Udong
Author: Kara David
Characters: Udong

SYNOPSIS

This episode features how a ten
year old boy (Udong), sacrifices
his hours of playful childhood
with 6 months of physical hard
work as a sugarcane cutter.
Udong, like the other hundreds
of migrant workers from an
island of Aklan chose to work in
the sugar plantations also called
“ Sakada” in Batangas in order to
support their families back
home.
At his early age, you will hardly
notice the juvenile spirit in
Udong. He acts and talks like a
young man in his 20 ’s, very
much determined to shed off
sweat and hardships just to feed
his family. Though with his
father, Udong still works just like
others, he forcefully grips and
cuts the sugarcanes without
uncertainty, ignoring the
tormenting pain on his small and
innocent body. He would even
exchange an hour of sleep
during periods of break than
play around with other kids of
his age. The scenario of all day
work has been a daily routine
for Udong and for other workers
as well, enduring all the physical
agony and longing for their
families had become their
driving force to bear hardship.
But contrary to Udong, these
hardships and sufferings are
already unbearable for Toto, a
14 year old boy, who was forced
by his father to replace him to
work and pay for their debt. If
given a chance Toto would
rather work in Aklan with his
family. The tough work in the
sugar plantation was even made
harder by the fact that he is
several miles away from home.
But to stop working is not an
option, and so Toto was left to
endure all the pain for several
months. He only then looks
forward for the end of Sakada to
finally go back home.
Until the six months of laborious
work has finally come to an end,
the two boys along with other
migrant workers eagerly wait to
claim their salary. With several
computations, and deductions,
the two kids ended up with P600
each at hand. Not enough for
Toto to buy a television set, toys
and food for his waiting siblings.
While other workers, turned out
to go home empty handed.
Sadly, the six months of Sakada
didn ’t’ paid off for their
tremendous hard work.
According to the owner of the
plantation, this is because the
workers had their commodities,
vices such as cigarettes and
alcoholic drinks and family debts
that were finally deducted to
their wages. And so, these
workers had to make another
debt just to bring some food and
toys for their families. No
wonder, if there ’s another
Udong or Toto in the next batch
of Sakada. And even if, the
turnout of the wages for some
seemed disappointing, the
workers ignored the thought for
a moment; excitement to go
back to their homeland appeared
to outweigh the reality that their
families will hardly be eating
again.p

COMMENTARIES

Just like other documentaries i have watched, Babalik na si Udong also made me feel pity. It tackles the life of Udong who is a young boy forced to work as a sugarcane cutter that was happen because of the indebtedness of his father from his boss. As a payment for that, udong will work at his innocent body just to help his family. This a kind of child labor that destroy his right to enjoy his childhood by playing with other children and sending him to school to be educated. The documentary reveals the sufferings of a young boy nod made by circumstance but by human. This is a kind of maltreatment and to children. I just hope that this issue will be given actions and the future children will not suffer same to Udong.

SYNOPSIS

"Babalik na si Ma'am" is an i Witness documentary by Howie Severino which is one of the best documentaries she has made. As a matter of fact "Babalik na si Ma'am" was a finalist at the 2003 Japan Price Educational Program Contest.
It is about the story of Domestic Helpers(DH) abroad who were actually teachers in the Philippines before but pushed to seek better paying jobs like DH because of the poor income in their profession in the Philippines.
But the government has offered good opportunities for these Overseas Filipino Workers(OFWs) to sent them back in our country with assurance that they will be given jobs according to their professions as teachers with appropriate salaries.
Mercy Elegado was just one of the DH abroad who was given a chance to continue her profession in the Philippines. She was so happy knowing that she will be able to meet and accompany her family again as well as she will be teaching in Isabela. But she also felt sad for leaving the people she had served and considered family too like Alice Cheung that according to her was a nice and kind boss.Upon teaching again the grade one and two pupils of Isabela, Mercy has dignify herself from being Domestic helper and bring back her loved profession and be respective teacher again. According to her she was one calling her boss "ma'am" before but now she is the teacher being called "ma'am" that for her shows so much respect from her students.

COMMENTARIES

The "Babalik na si Ma'am" is a touching and inspirational story that also made me admire of the people who were introduced here like Mercy Elegado, a diligent teacher and domestic helper. But another face of the story is pity and dislike.
I feely pity for the OFWs who tried their luck abroad to find better opportunities and sacrifice to be separated from their love ones specially their families just to give them a better future. Although these opportunities might lessen their pride and social existence. Like the filipino domestic helpers (DH) abroad who were teachers before in the philippines; come to think of it, teaching is a better profession than being domestic helper in terms of respect and pride but apparently domestic helpers abroad have greater income compared to teachers in the philippines.
I don' t blame the OFWs in their decision but how can they sacrifice their family for the purpose of obtaining more money from other country. Why not find some other way around and work locally? They are working in other country and the said country will benefit from their service instead from their own.
In fact an increase in number of OFWs also give rise to the number of broken families in the country because of the lack of interpersonal communication and absence of one parent in the family to show his or her love and comfort. Their are lot of children today who were engaged in different vices because of lack of guidance from both parents. One parent is not enough to fullfill the emotional needs of their children because they need total attention from parents. So if one parent is working abroad, children might find something to make them happy or lessen their loneliness, and they might think they can find it from their friends or from using drugs. So by decreasing the number of OFWs, number of broken families will also decrease and children will not bother to become apart from their parents.
Although the government has made a program for the OFWs, still it is not enough to answer the issues on employment and low salaries which give idea to the filipinos to work abroad. Lot of job opportunities and proper salaries will help solve these issues.
As a future entrepreneur, I am hoping to be a job provider instead of job seeker in the future. I will help filipinos to have good jobs with the purpose of increasing the employment rate and decreasing the number of OFWs.

SYNOPSIS

The "Basurero" is an i Witness documentary telling the story of its case studies.
The first part of the documentary begins in a family living in an overpass in Cubao also known as "barangay overpass". During the day, the family begs from the people passing the overpass, and during night they collect leftover foods that they called "batchoy". They collect batchoy from garbage cans of fastfood restaurants but they also asked permission first before they start collecting batchoy such as leftover vegetables, fish and meat.
One member of the family living in barangay overpass is Jennifer who believes that collecting batchoy to feed their hunger is better than to live in marinduque wherein the only food that she can eat all day are just boiled bananas.
After collecting enough batchoy for the family, they take it to the overpass and recook it so that the germs are somehow killed. And the batchoy they collected become their meal for the night.
The second part of the story focuses on the "tambakeros", the term calles to a group of scavengers that live in the dumpsite of pier 18 in Tondo, Manila.
One of the tambakeros is Jessie de Guzman who is popularly called "putol" by his co-scavengers due to his incomplete number of fingers. Two of his fingers were cut off while he was searching for scrops.
Another tragic experience made by being tambakero is the event that even the life of a young child was taken. Jr Baloran is the name of the child who was accidentally killed by a bulldozer while he was searching fore some plastics and cans. Adoracion and Fabian Baloran are the parents of the innocent child. They decided to stop their activity as tambakeros because it just reminds them of the painful accident happened to their son who was the only boy of the family.
Jay Taruc, the reporter of the documentary also try to be a tambakero for almost two hours but unfortunately being tambakero is a very difficult job so he only earned 7 pesos from collecting plastic and cans and according to the tambakeros by that amout you can buy icewater.
There are also other tambakeros in the dumpsite like Proceso dela Cruz a veteran tambakero, Ronald a teenager that only works to support his vices which is rugby. According to Ronald, most of the kids and teenagers tambakeros aging 10 to 16 years old use the money they earned to buy rugby amounting 5 pesos per plastic. According to him there is a place in the dumpsite where they do their vices, they called the place "sirang bahay" or an abandoned house.
The third case study discusses the new face of Smokey Mountain which is formerly a big dumpsite and eventually rehabitalized. There are now building established in the place to serve as a shelter for the former scavengers of the Smokey Mountain. They planted vegetables and recycled the garbage into fertilizers to earn money rather than being scavengers again. The children are now spending their time through studying and developing their talents like dancing. Angela Villacoria who was a former scavenger is now a helper of her family in planting and making new products like souvenir from recycled plastics. These total changes in Smokey Mountain were brought about through the help of a person of a kind heart and artistic mind named Fr. Benigno Beliran. He is a missionary who headed the different livelihood programs in the Smokey Mountain.

BASURERO - commentaries

The documentary "basurero" discusses the major economic and social issues arising among filipinos in lowerclass. And also poverty, as what has been shown in the documentary, is the root of other economic and social issues such as hunger, lack of education, diseases, pollution, malnutrition, drug addiction, child labor and other economic and social issues relating to poverty. The tambakeros or scavengers and the batchoy collectors are just some faces of poverty. They are just some of the people who can truly describe what is poverty. While watching these people, I feel great pity towards them for the tragic situation they suffer because of poverty. So lucky I was for not experiencing their experiences and live life like the way they do. They are finding their own way to survive from the hardships of circumstances by searching food and money from garbage and wastes. These actions are almost not humanly doings yet they can't find other way but these. The very difficult fact to accept is that even the innocent children whose capabilities are weak are forced to work just to sustain their hunger. At their very young age, they are the most victimized by poverty.
Instead of enjoying their rights to be educated and play with other children, here they are, working forcely, expose to pollution, prone to different diseases, and become addict of drugs. Despite all of these I still admire them for being strong and so hopeful even in hopeless situations.
Poverty always exists and always been a problem since we dont execute solutions to solve it or just to lessen the number of people who suffer from it. Since then it's a problem of yesterday, today, and tomorrow and we cannot escape the fact that even the next of our next generation would still experience the same way like today's people experience. But in order to help the less fortunate people escape from poverty, the government must take the lead in providing solutions. But in the case of our situation, the government is also part of the problem. Instead of being the vital agent to lead the steps in terminating poverty in our country, the government just enjoy the wealth of the economy without the will to help the poor filipinos. If we are just united and willing to help our fellow filipinos, with the grace of God, we can survive from poverty. Let us be part of the solution rather than be part of the problem.
The documentary is just a tool to remind us, open up our minds and awaken our social conciousness to the problems our country is facing right now. The purpose of this documentary is to show the problems and encourage people to care and be aware on the social and economic problems. I sallute the i witness team for delivering us an inspirational documentary that made us realize the social and economic problems which need social and economic solutions.
